## Overview

AUWA Brand Book. Version 1.0, August 2026.

The harmony between the unseen and the seen.

This file is generated from `brand.md`, the full brand book, which carries the reasoning, the
logo artwork rules and the asset pack. Read that first if you are a person. This one exists so
an agent can apply the brand without a designer in the loop.

## Colors

- **sumi** `#0b1116` — Primary text on light surfaces, the wordmark, headings, active navigation.
- **yoru** `#0f1623` — The warm dark canvas. Footer, dark pages, the figure strip, editorial slides.
- **washi** `#efe9dd` — Light text, icons and borders on uniform dark surfaces. The warm paper ink.
- **surface** `#f8f7f4` — Page background on every light page, and the light foreground over photography.
- **paper** `#ecebe7` — A layer sitting above Surface. Currently the menu overlay panel, and nothing else.

## Typography

- **EB Garamond** (Display and editorial), Google Fonts. The voice of AUWA. Headlines, brand copy, article body, pullquotes. Regular 400 is the default weight for everything.
- **Instrument Sans** (Functional and UI), Google Fonts. Navigation, labels, metadata, captions, buttons. Clean and slightly warm, and it never competes with the serif.
- **Noto Serif JP** (Japanese), Google Fonts. Kanji and Japanese-language text, including the micro-season characters.

Scale:

- Page title (h1): EB Garamond 2.5px, weight 400
- Section heading (h2): EB Garamond 28px, weight 400
- Card title: EB Garamond 20px, weight 400
- Article body: EB Garamond 18px, weight 400
- Pullquote: EB Garamond 1.75px, weight 400
- Navigation: Instrument Sans 14px, weight 400
- UI text and excerpts: Instrument Sans 14px, weight 400

## Do's and Don'ts

- Do: Set it in EB Garamond, always
- Do: Place it on a solid light or solid dark field
- Do: Keep the U-height clear space on every side
- Do: Use Sumi on light surfaces and Washi on dark ones
- Don't: Redraw, substitute or trace the letterforms
- Don't: Place it over busy imagery
- Don't: Distort, outline, shadow or animate it
- Don't: Use pure white, ever. Washi is the light
- Never mix Sumi with Washi. They belong to different families.
- Never use pure #ffffff anywhere. Surface is the white.
- Never use Washi over photography. It blends into bright spots; Surface is the foreground over imagery.
- Never hardcode a hex. Consume the token, so changing one value moves every page, component and email.
